People of Earth! By day six I ran up against some of the physical challenges of being on tour as a human. Work travel creates opportunities to find city-specific solutions to the questions our bodies ask us every day: What’s for breakfast? Isn’t it bedtime? Where is the sleeping place? When I engage my mind, my body so often gets silenced or dismissed, until it asks for rests in a way I cannot ignore. On the 6th day, a morning headache occupied the space I had reserved for cycling around the neighborhoods; I am grateful for my excellent housing situation as a guest of Moon Palace books proprietors Jamie and Angela, who folded me into the organism of their home with the ease of a flower receiving a bee. Once I could look at a screen, writing about my beautiful day at the radio station and the bowling alley used the rest of my available alone time.
Back in Portland I shared with Mic my desire to meet his Minneapolis Baldies family; after spending so much time with their stories and voices, seeing the PBS documentary Minnesota Experience: The Baldies, and poring over the photos before, during, and after production, I wanted to personally thank these people who survived a youth of standing up against violent street expressions of white supremacy. One of Mic’s great gifts as an educator is hearing and responding to people, and his warm introductions connecting me to his people have given me wealth you can’t buy anywhere in the galaxies. It’s been amazing to meet the crew.
